Whales are marine mammals and like most mammals the female whale carries her offspring in her womb. Gestation periods can vary greatly depending on the whales species and can be anywhere from 9 months to 18 months long! Some species of whale begin their journey of mating and producing offspring by making large migration trips thousands of miles from their feeding grounds to their mating grounds.
A dolphin mother will always wean her youngster before she gives birth to another baby. Young dolphins often use a technique that scientists call "snacking" where the calf rapidly swims belly-up just under the water surface and traps tiny fish between the surface and air.
Dolphin youngsters stay with their mothers during the teenage years until they mature at between five and ten years old. Dolphin mothers are brilliant teachers and invest a great deal of time and energy preparing their youngsters carefully for independence.
They teach them how to find and catch prey, how to avoid dangers, how to interact with other dolphins social skills and how to find their way around their home range. Dive deeper into the world of whales and dolphins and learn more about their lives.
By adopting a whale or dolphin, by making a donation, or by fundraising for WDC, you can help us save these amazing creatures. How do dolphins give birth? How often do dolphins have babies? Do dolphins have belly buttons? When it comes time for whale mating season, many whales will migrate to warmer waters, especially if they inhabit a colder ocean region. Just like other mammals, whales have their own special behaviors to court female whales during mating season.
Males whales will compete for female attention and engage in songs, calls, and even caresses. Female whales can sometimes be choosy when it comes to who they mate with — they have been observed avoiding mating calls for several days even. However, once a female whale is willing to mate, she will mate with several partners over the course of some hours. She does this to increase her chances of getting pregnant, as she will only give birth every 1 to 5 years. Once a female whale becomes pregnant, her gestation period can vary greatly.
Depending on the particular species of whale, a gestation period can be anywhere between 9 to 16 months. Many whale calves will be born during the migration process, as female whales will try to get to warmer waters so their offspring can be born in more temperate conditions. How do whales give birth? Because whales are mammals, their calves grow inside their mothers and are born through live births.
