When should i turf my garden

If you laid it in autumn, it won't need feeding until the following spring. Follow the same principles as for laying a square or rectangular lawn. Outline the boundaries with pegs and line, then lay turfs along all the edges — both the straight sides and the one with the curve. You will need to overlap pairs of turfs slightly to form the curve, and then trim the excess. Next, starting at one of the corners of the lawn, lay rows of turf, working forwards from one of the straight sides and staggering the joints from row to row.

As usual, work from a board placed on top of turfs you have just laid. As with any edge, curved or straight, you may need to adjust the lengths of the turfs as you approach it to avoid finishing with a tiny section. Turfing is not an exact science: expect to lift, recut, adjust and replace the turfs as you proceed.

Step 1 Use two or three timber boards as a platform to work from old scaffold boards or gravel boards are ideal. Step 2 Dig over the area to a depth of about 15cm and remove all debris, large stones, weeds and old tree roots.

Step 3 Use a garden rake to rake over the ground to produce an even surface. Step 4 Rake it over again, repeating the process until the whole area is level, even and firm, but not compacted.

Step 1 Lay your turf along all the edges first, with the longest sides of the turf parallel to the boundary line. Step 2 Lay a timber board to use as a platform to work from and start laying turf strips from left to right.

Step 3 Fill any hollows in any of the turf by peeling back the strip and filling beneath it with top soil before replacing it. Step 4 Cut turf strips to size using an edger.

Lay sods with staggered joints as in the pattern of a brick wall and closely butted together avoiding gaps. Ensure the turves are level by having a bucket of sandy soil at hand and adding or removing soil as necessary. When laying is complete, lightly spread a mixture of sand and soil or compost and work into the joints, using a rake or brush.

This top-dressing fills any minor hollows and also helps the turves knit together and become established more quickly. After top-dressing, leave the turf undisturbed; the first few days are critical for root development. Aftercare In dry weather, frequent watering may be necessary to keep the new turf constantly moist. During dry periods in mid- to late summer, water every five to 10 days. At other seasons water during dry periods every 14 days. Be careful not to over-water, as this can lead to shallow rooting and encourages the weed grass, annual meadow grass.

Mow, with the blades set high, as soon as the grass has grown to about 5cm 2in. Problems Laying turf to make a lawn is problem free as long as turf is kept watered until it has rooted into the underlying soil. Plastic netting in turf A number of turf producers grow their turf on a fine plastic mesh or net. Wildflower turf can also now be obtained grown on a plastic-free felt base. Lawns Lawns: spring and summer care At this time of year, the lawn is actively Lawns Lawn: rust disease Like many other plants, lawn grasses can suffer In these circumstances particular attention would be required to ensure the new lawn is laid immediately upon delivery and receives sufficient water to thrive.

The reason for this is that turf is a living, breathing roll of grass plants, microbes and tiny insects. When turf is rolled up it acts like a blanket, trapping warm air in the roll.

As already mentioned, you should always roll out the turf within 24 hours of delivery, even when laying in colder months. Due to less daylight hours in winter, if you are laying a particularly large area it would be prudent to begin laying immediately on the day of delivery and if necessary, complete the project the following day. This reduces the risk of your turf being rolled up longer than necessary.

You may also wish to choose a morning delivery slot, if given the option. As we mentioned earlier, early to mid autumn is an ideal time of year to lay turf, however spring can also be a suitable time for turfing your garden, due to cooler temperatures and typically more rainfall than summertime, which should reduce watering requirements.

In recent years, weather has been changeable and often extreme. Putting in the effort now will pay dividends by creating a level and aesthetically pleasing lawn that is easier to mow and maintain. If this is the first time you have laid a lawn, you may not realise that when the ground looks level to the eye there are likely to be areas that still need work. Gently walking up and down the area is the best way to identify irregularities.

Through your feet, you can sense the soft and hard ground, dips and raised patches, in a way that is not possible with machinery. Ideally, you should water the soil a couple of days before your turf arrives. Ensure the soil is moist to a depth of 75mm ready to provide water to the roots of the turf.

This also helps the soil to settle and it will need to be raked level again just before the turf arrives. As outlined above, it is essential to lay your turf as soon as it is delivered.
